The mechanical engineering group designs and supports the manufacturing of rugged handheld and mobile communication devices.

Job Description

• Contribute to the mechanical design and development of portable and mobile two-way communication products, and improve current generation radio designs. Use best-in-class tools to develop solutions to design challenges.
• Identify design issues, set design direction and goals, and plan tasks for segments of engineering programs.
• Create and maintain the mechanical engineering schedule for your own tasks and responsibilities.
• Determine and implement changes that enhance a design or meet functional specifications.
• Help meet cost goals and monitor current cost status.
• Seek guidance and feedback as needed to improve performance.
• Perform stress and tolerance analyses on new or existing designs and concepts to judge theoretical feasibility.
• Design and run experiments using statistical tools and techniques to confirm analyses, evaluate designs against product specifications, or solve problems.
• Develop and present test plans when problems arise, and coordinate testing and data acquisition.
• Interface with program team members, suppliers and customers.
• Negotiate tasks and schedules with other internal groups to keep product schedules on track.

Additional Qualified Skills

• Experience in product development preferred.
• Understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes such as injection molding, sheet metal and castings, plus Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA), preferred.
• Working knowledge of worst-case and statistical tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning and geometric tolerancing.
• Working knowledge of finite element analysis theory and general mechanical engineering analysis.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills, data acquisition skills, and the ability to use statistical tools and techniques.
• Ability to solve difficult problems involving testing, planning and implementation for new parts.
• Knowledge of design engineering, test processes and factory processes.
• Basic computer skills, with Pro/Engineer preferred, and working knowledge of common business applications.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work well within a team.
• Good organizational and time management skills, including daily and weekly planning and multitasking.
• Ability to create, read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Negotiation skills, presentation skills, and the ability to run effective meetings.
