Overview

Research Internships at Microsoft offer a dynamic setting for research careers, with world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers. The work spans computing, healthcare, economics, the environment and other scientific and technical fields.

The Machine Learning and Optimization (MLO) group in MSR-Redmond researches the intersection of optimization, machine learning and systems. The current focus is combining ML with optimization for efficient decision-making. Example projects include training Large Language Models (LLMs) for algorithm design (for example, natural language to integer programming and heuristic design), accelerating optimization algorithms for interactive decision dialogues, and designing novel algorithms for end-to-end supply chain management. The group's research also draws on theory to build algorithms and machine learning solutions that run efficiently at scale.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice, working alongside doctoral candidates and leading researchers. Over a 12-week internship, interns are paired with mentors, collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and take part in the research community. Internships are available in all research areas and offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Interns design algorithms and models, prototype them, run experiments and analyze results. They are encouraged to show initiative and suggest further research directions. They are expected to document their ideas and, where results are suitable, contribute to a paper.

Other Requirements

  • Interns must be physically located at their manager's Microsoft worksite for the full internship.
  • Applicants must submit at least two reference letters, a cover letter and any relevant work or research samples. Reference letters can only be requested after the application is submitted and may not be requested for every candidate, so letter writers should be alerted in advance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in C#, C++ or Python (or a similar language)
  • Experience in optimization or algorithm design
  • Experience in machine learning and LLMs (for example, data curation, post-training, agentic frameworks)
  • Demonstrated ability to run simulations and analyze results

Microsoft accepts applications and processes offers for these roles on an ongoing basis throughout the academic calendar (September to April). The position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted until it is filled.
