Overview

Research Internships at Microsoft offer a dynamic setting for research careers, with world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers. They work across many scientific and technical fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

The Algorithms group at MSR Redmond is looking for doctoral students to work on theoretical computer science, especially algorithms for approximate nearest neighbor search, erasure coding for distributed storage, and theoretical aspects of Large Language Models. The group values fundamental theoretical advances and also helps Research Interns connect their theory to practical challenges and real-world impact. Researchers and Research Interns have published influential work at venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR. More details on the group and its projects are available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/group/algorithms-redmond/.

For the fullest consideration, apply by January 1, 2027.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice, working alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's leading researchers. Interns advance their own careers and contribute to research and development progress. During the 12-week internship, each intern is paired with a mentor and is expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and take part in the community. Research internships cover all areas of research and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns must be physically located at their manager's Microsoft worksite for the full internship.
  • Along with the qualifications below, you will need to submit at least two reference letters, a cover letter, and any relevant work or research samples. Reference letters can be requested only after you submit your application and may not be requested for every candidate. It is a good idea to alert your letter writers in advance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Publications at top theoretical computer science (CS) or machine learning (ML) conferences (STOC, FOCS, SODA, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, etc.) or top journals

Microsoft accepts applications and processes offers for these roles on an ongoing basis throughout the academic calendar (September to April). The position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted until it is filled.
