AI Software Engineer Intern

Role Overview

As a full stack Software Development Engineer Intern, you will help design, build, and maintain software across the full application stack, from user-facing interfaces to APIs, data stores, and cloud infrastructure. You will write well-tested, maintainable code, take an active part in code review, and use AI coding assistants to speed up delivery while checking AI-generated output for correctness and security. Working closely with product managers, designers, and peer engineers is essential to building resilient, scalable solutions.

Responsibilities

• Full Software Development Lifecycle: Build features end-to-end, from design through deployment, across front-end (React/Angular/Vue) and back-end (REST/GraphQL, microservices) solutions.
• System Design and Architecture: Contribute to scalable system design by evaluating architectural trade-offs, defining data models and API contracts, and choosing suitable cloud-native and persistence strategies.
• Code Quality, Testing and Review: Write thorough tests, uphold coding standards, and review code, including AI-generated code, for security, performance, and maintainability. Develop, maintain, and run automated test suites to validate functionality and catch defects early.
• CI/CD, DevOps and Operational Readiness: Maintain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code, monitor production systems, and take part in incident response, including AI-integrated components.
• Cross Functional Collaboration and Technical Communication: Work with product managers, designers, and platform teams to scope and deliver features, writing clear specs and explaining trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.

ServiceNow hires in multiple locations, including Santa Clara, CA, San Diego, CA, Kirkland, WA, West Palm Beach, FL, and other areas. The work location will be determined based on team growth strategies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, with a graduation date no earlier than May 2028.
  • Must be available to work full-time hours for a 12-week period, either May to August or June to September 2027.
• Experience using or thinking critically about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving, such as using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, or analyzing AI-driven insights.
• Full-stack development skills: Hands-on experience through coursework, research, projects, or internships with front-end frameworks (React/Angular/Vue), back-end languages (Node.js, Python, Java, Go), databases, REST/GraphQL APIs, and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), plus comfort adopting emerging AI/ML tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Systems thinking: Understanding of trade-offs between consistency, availability, and performance, plus working knowledge of distributed system patterns and API/database design.
• Software engineering fundamentals: Prior experience writing clean, secure, well-tested code and treating code review as a quality practice.
• AI fluency: Uses AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Codeium, etc.) and LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, open-weight models) to build features, and reviews AI-generated code carefully for correctness and security.
• Technical communication: Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans and explain trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Compensation

For positions in this location, the base pay is $58.96 per hour, plus equity (when applicable), variable or incentive compensation, and benefits. The base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
