Software Engineering Co-op (Spring/Summer 2027)

What You Will Do

This is a full-time, Monday-Friday co-op running January through August, including the Spring semester. Students are expected to take a semester off from coursework to fully take part in this working mentorship.

We are looking for a Spring/Summer Co-op for our Avionics Software Tools team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The team builds Avionics Function tools that configure Avionics products, and Integrated Modular Architecture systems tools that let systems engineers design and deploy aircraft software and systems I/O. The engineer will work with software and systems engineers on DO-330 qualified tools, simulation and infrastructure tools for multiple avionics applications, supporting Collins Avionics commercial and military platforms. The team also builds cloud and desktop environments used in DevOps pipelines, desktop deployments and external customer configuration of Avionics products.

• Work on a cross-functional engineering team.
• Collaborate closely with a mentor using Collins Aerospace engineering processes.
• Develop tools used in Avionics software development within a DevOps environment.

What You Will Learn

• How software tools are developed, deployed and used in Avionics to certify airborne software and aircraft systems.
• How to work in a multidisciplinary team that delivers solutions used by Collins engineers to build Avionics products.

Qualifications You Must Have

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM), actively enrolled through the end of the co-op session.
• At least 90 hours of credit completed by the start of the co-op session.
• Programming in C, C++, C#, Java or Python.
• Microsoft Windows 11 experience and familiarity with operating and using software on PCs.
• Experience may come from on-the-job work, research, coursework or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer

• Object-oriented programming experience.
• Familiarity with software containers.
• Familiarity with automated testing, including unit, functional and high-level tests.
• Familiarity with DevOps concepts and CI/CD practices.
• Experience with pipeline tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Grafana, Artifactory, Jenkins, etc.
• Prior RTX internship, co-op or work experience.

This position is Onsite, meaning the employee will work primarily on site. Candidates may be asked to attend select interview steps in person at an RTX office, whether the role is onsite, hybrid or remote.
