Health Virtual Underwriting Externship for Students

Position Summary

Are you a current college student interested in insurance and underwriting? This is a three-week virtual externship designed to introduce you to the basics of underwriting and risk analysis, along with professional development sessions to build your skill set. It suits students who want to learn about the underwriting field and get a head start on their career with an industry leader.

The Underwriting Externship Program gives externs hands-on underwriting experience and helps them understand the work of a full-time underwriter and Aetna's underwriting organization. It is one of the main pipelines for the Underwriting Internship Program and the full-time Underwriting Leadership Development Program.

Participants may also apply and interview for a position in the 2028 Summer Corporate Underwriting Internship Program (UIP), which is intended to take place at the Hartford, CT office under a hybrid work model.

Program Overview

• Unpaid Educational Experience: Participants who complete the program receive priority during the following internship recruiting season.
• Introduction to Underwriting: Learn the basics of underwriting, risk analysis and pricing strategies.
• Virtual Training Sessions: Join interactive sessions led by industry experts to deepen your understanding of underwriting concepts and practices.
• Case Studies: Apply what you learn to real-world scenarios, work with peers to analyze risks, make underwriting decisions and present recommendations.
• Professional Development: Learn about career paths in the insurance industry, receive mentorship from experienced professionals and build foundational skills in communication, problem solving and decision-making.
• Networking: Connect with company leaders, underwriters and other industry professionals.

Program Details

The program runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:30pm ET over three weeks, with sessions in late January and early February. The program is virtual, and participants use their own laptop or computer.
