What You Will Do

Collins Aerospace is looking for a software intern to join our software development team in Sterling, VA. Our software engineers work in an adaptive, engaging environment that supports rapid learning.

This role supports high-fidelity simulation and modelling efforts for NC3 mission-system integration and crew training for the armed forces. The position is onsite in Sterling, VA.

  • Work with a high-performance software team to support development of aircraft simulation models for a Mission Crew Training Device.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, scrum masters, product owners, software architects, and other teams to advance software product maturity.
  • Produce high-quality mission simulation software, validation tests, and documentation.
  • Take part in peer reviews of software engineering artifacts.

What You Will Learn

  • Gain hands-on experience in a professional software development environment.
  • Build knowledge of simulation concepts, design, and implementation.
  • Develop application-specific knowledge of communication systems and how armed forces end users apply them.
  • Work with intricate mission systems for a critical defense platform.
  • Become familiar with DevOps processes and tools such as CI/CD pipelines, development containers, and deployment frameworks.
  • Grow your career toward becoming a subject matter expert.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session.
  • Strong foundation in the C++ programming language.
  • Experience with the Python programming language.

Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience working within an Agile framework.
  • Knowledge of microservices, containers, and orchestrators.
  • Experience with the GitLab DevOps platform.
  • Understanding of Radio Frequency (RF) communications concepts.
  • Knowledge of the CI/CD software development process.
  • Experience in software simulation.

Security Clearance: U.S. citizenship is required. The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. The clearance type is DoD Secret, and an active clearance is required after day 1.
