We are searching for top talent for the TDS Proteins API USP Co-Op role in Malvern, PA.

  • 4 vacancies are currently available.
  • The co-op term is typically six months, from January to June 2027 (flexible).
  • Full-time requirement (40 hours per week), fully on-site.

Purpose

The TDS Proteins Development API organization is seeking motivated Co-Op candidates to support Upstream Process Development initiatives focused on mammalian cell culture, bioreactor process development, process modeling, advanced data analytics, and manufacturing scale-down models.

This role offers hands-on experience with CHO cell culture processes, dynamic feeding strategies, media and process parameter studies, product quality assessments, and automated high-throughput bioreactor systems. Co-Ops will work with scientists, engineers, and internal and external partners to generate, analyze, and interpret data that advances upstream process understanding, scalability, productivity, and manufacturing readiness.

Responsibilities

Depending on the assigned project, responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting upstream process development involving CHO cell culture, media development, bioreactor operation, and process optimization.
  • Designing and running shake-flask, small-scale bioreactor, and automated high-throughput bioreactor studies.
  • Developing correlations between real-time biocapacitance signals and offline viable cell density measurements across CHO cell lines and media conditions.
  • Supporting dynamic feeding strategies that adjust nutrient feed rates based on real-time cell density.
  • Evaluating the impact of media components, feeding strategies, and process parameters on cell culture performance and product quality, including titer, viability, productivity, and galactosylation.
  • Supporting development and characterization of small-scale models that represent manufacturing-scale cell culture processes.
  • Comparing small-scale and manufacturing-scale process performance to identify conditions that support process representation and scalability.
  • Performing advanced analytics on historical and experimental process and spent-media datasets to find actionable insights.
  • Developing and applying mechanistic, data-driven, or hybrid models to explain and predict outcomes such as end-of-run titer and cell-specific productivity.
  • Designing experiments informed by model outputs, process knowledge, and statistical design principles.
  • Analyzing, visualizing, interpreting, and presenting experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques.
  • Taking part in technical discussions, design of experiments, and problem-solving activities to address knowledge gaps.
  • Collaborating with internal and external partners and actively joining recurring project meetings.
  • Maintaining laboratory notebooks, technical reports, datasets, and other documentation per established guidelines.
  • Providing additional laboratory, analytical, and project support as needed.

Technical Skills

  • Experience with aseptic mammalian cell culture techniques, including suspension cell culture.
  • Experience with bioreactor operations and upstream process development principles.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and statistical problem-solving skills.
  • Experience analyzing, visualizing, and presenting scientific or process data.
  • Proficiency in at least one scientific computing language, such as Python, MATLAB, or R.
  • Ability to apply data-driven approaches to process understanding and optimization.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience or exposure in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

Cell Culture and Bioprocessing

  • Experience with aseptic mammalian cell culture and bioreactor operations.
  • Experience with fed-batch and/or perfusion cell culture processes.
  • Experience supporting upstream process development, media development, or process characterization studies.
  • Familiarity with Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools and real-time process monitoring.

Data Science, Modeling and Analytics

  • Experience using data analysis and statistical software, including JMP.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), and multivariate data analysis.
  • Experience developing dynamic cell culture process models using mechanistic, data-driven, and/or hybrid approaches.
  • Knowledge of Process Systems Engineering principles and model-based process development.
  • Experience with data science, machine learning, predictive modeling, and advanced analytics.
  • Experience developing algorithms, predictive models, or digital tools to support process monitoring and optimization.

Programming and Scientific Computing

  • Coding experience using Python, MATLAB, R, or similar scientific computing platforms.
  • Experience with data visualization, data aggregation, data management, and scientific programming.
