Underwriting Trainee

Job Description

Develop foundational underwriting skills, build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and gain familiarity with GRS/LMRe's business plan, underwriting guidelines, and associated processes and procedures.

Assist in developing comprehensive portfolio monitoring tools and dashboards to track key performance indicators (KPIs) across property and casualty lines. Provide support for addressing internal portfolio-related queries from various departments (OOU, GRS product leaders, etc.), including quarterly business reviews (QBRs) and ad hoc requests.

Risk Assessment & Underwriting Support

Under direct supervision, assist in assessing treaty risks by providing supporting information for underwriting decisions across US Standard/Specialty Casualty and/or US Property lines. Support senior underwriters in preparing pricing analyses, risk assessments, and underwriting documentation for internal approvals.

Begin developing familiarity with primary operations, product exposures, and treaty structures to build foundational underwriting judgment. Assist in maintaining accurate pipeline and portfolio data; support compliance with underwriting authorities and controls. Support documentation of underwriting decisions and timely processing of renewals under senior guidance.

Support data analysis tasks and assist in translating information into actionable insights, including leveraging GenAI tools as directed. Develop strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and partners including UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, and Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America. Support cross-functional coordination with claims, actuarial, finance, legal, and operations teams.

Actively participate in all Account Huddles and renewal discussions. Contribute to team knowledge sharing and process improvement initiatives.

Bachelor's degree in business, finance, actuarial science, risk management, or related field. 0-2 years of experience; prior internship or exposure to insurance, reinsurance, or financial services is a plus. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a curiosity and eagerness to learn underwriting fundamentals. Strong initiative and confidence to take ownership of necessary tasks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organization and attention to detail. May be undertaking or willing to pursue a professional Underwriting qualification.
