Compensation Overview

The hourly salary range shown for this position is a nationwide market range covering a broad set of salaries for this role across the country. The actual hourly rate will depend on factors such as the scope, complexity and location of the role, the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials and experience, and other conditions of employment. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of the compensation and benefits program.

What Is the Opportunity?

Underwriters evaluate the acceptability of risk and determine appropriate pricing for insurance products. The Business Insurance (BI) Underwriting Professional Development Internship Program gives students exposure to this function at Travelers. The 10-week program (early June to mid-August) offers hands-on commercial insurance underwriting experience, on-the-job training, and insight into the property and casualty insurance industry from industry professionals. We are seeking interns who are serious about entering the insurance industry and who are interested in making underwriting their future career. This role is a potential pathway to the full-time Underwriting Professional Development Program (UPDP).

What Will You Do?

• Within your assigned business unit, each intern will be given a designated coach and is expected to complete core assignments and training modules on insurance and underwriting principles.
• Complete self-paced professional development courses in time management, presentation skills, and other key areas.
• Complete project work at the discretion of your manager. You may work independently or with other interns and will present findings to local leadership. Sample projects include a territorial risk assessment to determine profitability and underwriting opportunities, and a business process analysis to identify underwriting gaps.
• Learn to use modern analytical and artificial intelligence (AI) tools and platforms, and apply critical thinking to evaluate limitations related to the quality and accuracy of AI-assisted outputs.
• Learn about other areas at Travelers such as Risk Control, Claims, and related corporate functions. Interns may also join agency visits with Account Executives.
• Take part in the Enterprise Internship experience, which includes the Executive Speaker Series, networking events, and the Rising Senior Intern Symposium.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

• Preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Obtained or pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Liberal Arts (business focus preferred), Management, Marketing, or Risk Management and Insurance.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

What Is a Must Have?

• Pursuing or obtained a Bachelor's degree.
