About the job

Are you interested in an internship with Philips? We welcome students currently pursuing an undergraduate (BS) and/or graduate (MS) degree to join our 3 to 6 month paid Systems Engineering internship at our San Diego, CA site. You will gain hands-on experience in medical device systems engineering, design controls, requirements management, risk management, and regulatory compliance at a leading HealthTech company.

You will work alongside experienced engineers on our product portfolio, strengthening requirements traceability, risk management documentation, verification evidence, and technical documentation that show our products stay safe, effective, and compliant across their lifecycle.

Your role

  • Work in a fast-paced R&D environment developing innovative healthcare solutions. Support the upkeep and remediation of design control documentation, including requirements, verification records, risk management files, and technical file content.
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability between user needs, system requirements, design outputs, verification, validation evidence, and risk controls. Help with impact assessments and regression analyses for product changes, identifying affected requirements, tests, risks, labeling, and documentation.
  • Support the development, review, and maintenance of Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (dFMEAs) and other risk management deliverables. Evaluate engineering requirements and verification records for clarity, completeness, consistency, and testability.
  • Work with Systems Engineering, Quality & Regulatory, Verification & Validation, Human Factors, Software, Hardware, and project teams to resolve documentation and traceability issues. Help prepare technical documentation for regulatory compliance activities, including EU MDR requirements.
  • Collect, organize, and review objective evidence to support regulatory submissions, technical documentation, and audit readiness. Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, documentation quality, and design control effectiveness, and present project progress and recommendations to engineering teams and management.
