Researcher Intern

Overview

The Code|AI team leads applied research and data science for GitHub Copilot and VS Code, focused on the future of AI for developers. The group brings together scientists, researchers, and engineers who use AI to improve the productivity of millions of developers worldwide. The team has shipped AI for code advances in GitHub Copilot, VS Code, Visual Studio, and Copilot extensions in other IDEs.

The team works on post-training code-specific models, including code completion, code embedding models, and agentic research for Copilot Coding Agent, Copilot CLI, and Copilot Code Review. It shares its research with the developer and research communities to advance AI in developer tools.

Applied Researcher Interns will lead research projects that move from research into product. You will work with scientists, engineers, and designers across Microsoft Research, Microsoft product teams, and GitHub. You may build and train state-of-the-art models and apply or advance LLM approaches for software engineering, from RAG to evaluation. You will also work closely with developer product teams to run experiments, evaluate, iterate, and improve AI projects at scale.

This is a Summer 2027 internship.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to projects on the future of AI for developers.
• Collaborate across disciplines with product teams across Microsoft and GitHub.
• Stay current with research literature and product advances in AI for software engineering.
• Create new datasets from public code and Microsoft's internal data.
• Build and manage large-scale ML experiments and models.
• Embody Microsoft's culture and values.

Qualifications

Required:

• Currently enrolled in a Doctorate Degree program in a relevant field.
• Enrolled in a Doctorate Degree program in a relevant field during the academic term immediately before the internship.
• At least one additional quarter or semester of a Doctorate Degree program in a relevant area remaining after the internship ends.

Additional:

• 1+ year of experience in calculus, probability and statistics, and/or machine learning.
• 1+ year of experience in C/C++, Java, R, or Python, and domain libraries and frameworks such as PyTorch.
• 1+ year of experience (classroom or work) in areas of computer science such as natural language understanding, neural networks, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, optimization, data science, or privacy.

The base pay range for this internship is USD $5,690.00 to $11,210.00 per month. In the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area, the range is USD $7,410.00 to $12,250.00 per month. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
