Overview

Microsoft Research New York City (MSR NYC) is hiring Research Interns in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). Applications are welcome from all areas of machine learning. Current focus areas include reinforcement learning for language models, the science of deep learning, post-training, model interpretability and steering, reasoning, (recursive) self-improvement, and test-time scaling. The group encourages applicants with a mix of theoretical and empirical backgrounds.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. They work alongside doctoral candidates and leading researchers, learning, collaborating, and building a professional network. Interns advance their own careers while contributing to research and development progress.

During the 12-week internship, interns are paired with mentors and are expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present their findings, and take part in the community. Internships are available in all research areas and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Interns are expected to be physically located at their manager's Microsoft worksite for the duration of the internship.
