This classification is an on-the-job training role covering the duties of the Composites Fab and Assembler (RP4872) and Composites Fab and Assembler, Sr. (RP4879) classifications. Its purpose is to build the training and experience needed to perform the distinguishing requirements of those classifications.
Employees perform the functions of the referenced classifications and must show successful completion of assignments under oversight and instruction, where appropriate.
Duties include moving, positioning and handling plastic parts, assemblies, molds, tools, equipment, fixtures and materials. Trainees prepare plastics tooling by solvent washing, scraping and applying parting agents, and clean areas, equipment and aids used in impregnating operations. Work may include drilling parts from supplied jigs or templates, sanding and burring, rough trimming flash, smoothing patched areas, applying sealing resins to cut edges, hand stamping parts, wax polishing, pouring or spraying protective coatings, and applying pressure bags and sheets. Trainees also make simple lay-ups under guidance and build up, finish and assemble plastic parts under close observation of more experienced staff, where operations are well established and tooling is furnished.
Other responsibilities include performing manual operations that support the fabrication and assembly of plastic parts and assemblies, returning tools, equipment and material to storage, and keeping the work area orderly. Trainees use blueprints, specifications, decimal and fraction arithmetic, rules and measuring tapes.
