Intern: HPC/AI System Admin

This role is designed as an onsite position, and you will primarily work from an HPE partner or customer office.

Job Family Definition

This internship is for students or recent graduates of college, university, or other accredited academic programs pursuing diplomas or degrees (Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD) in any field. Interns assist with tasks aligned with their field of study, including research, team initiatives and projects, problem-solving, and creative thinking, to gain hands-on experience and build professional skills.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Site System Admins to log in to HPC compute, network, and storage components and run commands and scripts to manage system health and performance
• Write scripts and configuration files to automate system administration tasks and keep administration work consistent
• Review log files for errors and warnings that may indicate system health or performance issues, and work with customers and HPE on resolution
• Support planning and scheduling of system software upgrades, including estimating time and effort
• Plan and take appropriate care when executing privileged-level commands
• Collaborate with team members through face-to-face, phone, and online channels such as email, Teams, and Slack
• Occasionally assist with hands-on hardware and system installation
• Review tickets for needed hardware actions, claim them for action, and document actions in the ticket system before passing them to the next step
• Complete training on specialized compute hardware, network, and storage components
• Read system documentation and diagrams to identify components within a system
• Operate hand tools and low-power tools, select proper tools, and keep tools organized on site
• Lift and move parts and equipment up to 50 lbs individually or up to 75 lbs with another person
• Occasionally operate a pallet jack to move inventory within the site (for equipment that does not require an operator's license)
• Interface with the parts inventory manager when applicable
• Support senior team members on assigned technical projects, and help identify and troubleshoot technical issues
• Take part in team meetings, learn project methodologies, and keep up with new technologies relevant to the work
• Complete tasks assigned by a supervisor in a timely and efficient manner

Impact and Scope

Interns are university students actively enrolled in a college or university pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a technical field of study, and typically work during school breaks before returning to their university. Full-time students may work as part-time interns during the school year in some countries.
