Join Amgen's Mission of Serving Patients
Amgen's shared mission is to serve patients living with serious illnesses. Since 1980, the company has helped pioneer biotech in the fight against some of the world's toughest diseases. With four therapeutic areas (Oncology, Inflammation, General Medicine, and Rare Disease), Amgen reaches millions of patients each year.
The company is advancing a broad pipeline of medicines for cancer, heart disease, inflammatory conditions, rare diseases, and obesity and obesity-related conditions. Interns help research, manufacture, and deliver innovative medicines that help people live longer, fuller lives.
The culture is collaborative, innovative, and science based. Those who enjoy challenges will do well on the Amgen team.
What You Will Do
During this program, you will help design and integrate tools that speed up safety assessments from early discovery through post-marketing. You will build practical workflows that ingest molecular -omics datasets, clinical adverse event data, and internal preclinical data to surface mechanistic insights, score and weight potential safety concerns, and support non-clinical safety strategy. You will work closely with toxicologists, clinical safety scientists, computational biologists, and data engineering partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use and refine AI tools for data aggregation, processing, interpretation, and automated report generation across safety workflows
- Integrate multimodal data (public and internal), including omics, preclinical findings, clinical safety signals, and real-world evidence, into risk scoring and weighting methods that support risk-based decisions
- Generate mechanistic off-target hypotheses and pathway-level safety rationales to support internal safety evaluation strategies
- Write clear documentation (methods, assumptions, limitations) and contribute to the codebase for Target Safety Scoring Assessment
- Present progress and findings to TSRS stakeholders and incorporate feedback to iterate on tools and analyses
- Work with TSRS team members to prioritize use cases with the greatest impact
What you will gain:
- Real-world impact: Tools that directly inform target safety assessments and decisions across Amgen programs.
- End-to-end experience: From problem scoping and data ingestion to evaluation, validation, and communication.
- Scientific depth: Exposure to translational safety science, mechanistic biology, real-world datasets, and how multi-omics and literature evidence build risk narratives.
- Mentorship and feedback: Regular guidance from TSRS scientists, data scientists, and engineers, with chances to present to stakeholders.
- Career readiness: Mentored research experience on a collaborative, mission-driven team at the intersection of AI and safety sciences.
