Finance Internship in Herndon, VA

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is looking for a short-term intern (about 6 months) to join its Finance Team in Herndon, VA.

The intern will gain hands-on experience across Airbus Services areas in the Americas. Working under the mentorship of the Head of Services Finance (Americas) and senior controllers, the intern will support financial analytics, cost controlling, and performance management reporting that informs operational decisions.

The role is part of the 2035 Services Moonshot and the move to a digitally mature "One Roof" finance organization. The intern will handle standard controlling tasks and help bring Financial AI, automated business analytics, and generative AI use-case assessments into the team.

Meet the Team

The Finance and Accounting team provides analytics ranging from month-end closing to performance management analysis for internal partners. The team works with cross-functional global colleagues, so analytical skill, attention to detail, and an interest in numbers are important.

Working Environment

The Washington, D.C. metro area is home to several Airbus offices, including the Airbus Experience Center, which showcases Airbus's role in the aviation, aerospace and defense industries. The regional corporate headquarters is located next to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Planning & Analysis (40%)

• Help plan growth of the regional Services business within the Annual Operative Planning (AOP) cycle.
• Prepare regional financial reviews and perform root-cause analyses of budget variances, turning variance data into risk-mitigation or opportunity strategies.
• Help customize and deploy AI use-case assessments for financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Support adoption of AI-powered data retrieval tools that let leaders query P&L, headcount, and KPI metrics quickly.
• Assist the Head of Services Finance with executive-level briefings, metrics, and dashboards for senior management.

Finance Controller (40%)

• Carry out business controlling over an annual operational expenditure (OPEX) perimeter of about USD 50 million, including review and approval of procurement and headcount hiring.
• Implement basic AI use cases for business analytics and decision support, such as transaction categorization, spending anomaly detection, and monthly OPEX variance analysis.
• Monitor and analyze P&L and balance sheet items, including accruals, regional inventories, fixed and intangible assets, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and customer advance payments.
• Support the expansion of the "Revenue-to-Cash" Free Cash Flow (FCF) methodology and explore predictive cash-forecasting for collections.

Cost Accounting Management (20%)

• Work with regional Business Operations, Accounting, Financial Systems, and Consolidation teams to make sure cost accounting reflects business activity under IFRS and US GAAP.
• Help build key business parameters, such as unit costing models and effective hourly rates, to support pricing decisions.
• Develop clear overhead allocation methods that distribute support function costs fairly across regional legal entities.

Physical Requirements

The position is onsite 80% of the time. It involves sitting for long periods, standing, walking across office and production areas, carrying or lifting items up to 30 lbs (14 kg), and occasional travel at short notice. Required PPE depends on site, and steel-toed shoes are required for shop floor visits.
