Internship - 2027 Undergraduate 3M UX/UI Design Intern - Safety & Industrial Business Group (SIBG)

This undergraduate design internship is intended to start in Summer 2027. Interns typically work a full-time schedule over a 10-12 week assignment, limited to 899 hours per service credit year. The role also offers a path for candidates moving from private, public, government or military experience into a 3M career.

The Safety and Industrial Business Group (SIBG) at 3M offers products that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency across many industries. Key categories include personal safety (respiratory, hearing, eye, and fall protection), abrasives, adhesives and tapes, electrical markets (electrical tapes, wire connectors, cable management), automotive aftermarket products, and industrial and safety solutions.

About 3M Design

3M Design is a multidisciplinary internal creative team supporting brand, product, packaging, digital experience, and design research across industrial, safety, and professional-use markets. Interns apply design skills to real business challenges while working with experienced designers and cross-functional partners. Work may include brand design, packaging systems, design research, product and UX/UI design, prototyping, testing, and brand audits, supported by onboarding, coaching, and hands-on projects.

The Impact You'll Make

As an Undergraduate UX/UI Design Intern, you will help shape user-centered digital experiences that support industrial safety, productivity, and efficiency. You will work with UX Designers, Design Researchers, and technical and business partners within 3M's digital ecosystem, receiving mentorship and structured onboarding.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to UX and UI design for digital tools and software used in industrial and safety applications.
• Build skills through project work, designer feedback, and mentorship.
• Apply user-centered design methods with support from senior UX Designers and Researchers.
• Assist with user research, synthesize findings, and turn insights into design recommendations.
• Participate in design critiques, workshops, and cross-functional project discussions.
• Create UX deliverables such as user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and design documentation.
• Learn and apply 3M's digital and brand guidelines for clarity and consistency.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Experience using Figma.

Additional qualifications:

• Experience or coursework in UX/UI projects developing user flows, wireframes, prototypes and design documentation.
• Pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in Graphic Design, Brand Design, Design Communication, Industrial Design, UX/UI Design, or a related field.
• Experience or coursework in brand design, visual communication, UX/UI design, industrial design, product design, design research, or digital experience design.
• Working knowledge of design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Miro, SolidWorks, Sketchbook Pro, or similar software.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
• A growth mindset, creativity, curiosity, and passion for using design to solve business and customer challenges.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to communicate design thinking and explain design decisions to team members and stakeholders.

Work Arrangement

This role is on-site, with employees working at least four (4) days a week at 3M Center in Maplewood, MN. Travel may include up to 10% domestic travel. Interns receive a housing and transportation stipend under current policy. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without sponsorship.
