Product categories include personal safety (respiratory, hearing, eye, and fall protection), abrasives, adhesives and tapes, electrical markets (electrical tapes, wire connectors, and cable management), automotive aftermarket products, and industrial and safety solutions.

About 3M Design

3M Design is a multidisciplinary internal creative team within SIBG. It supports brand, product, packaging, digital experience, and design research for industrial, safety, and professional-use markets. Interns apply design skills to real business challenges while working with experienced designers and cross-functional partners.

Project work may include brand design, visual assets, packaging systems, design research, product and UX/UI design, prototyping, testing, brand audits, and system refinement. Onboarding, coaching, and hands-on projects are designed to build foundational design skills and explore a design career path.

Your Impact in This Role

As an Undergraduate Brand Design Intern, you will create clear, brand-aligned design solutions for 3M's industrial and safety products, customer experiences, and business priorities. You will contribute to marketing, product launches, packaging, digital content, sales materials, presentations, and customer communications.

You will work with designers, marketers, product managers, communications partners, and other cross-functional teams to turn ideas into strong visual storytelling and consistent application of 3M brand standards.

Key Expectations

• Support the creation of visual design assets for marketing, product, packaging, digital, and sales enablement materials.
• Assist with concept development for campaigns, product launches, presentations, and brand storytelling.
• Create layouts, graphics, mockups, visual systems, and presentation materials.
• Apply 3M brand standards and design systems to keep customer-facing experiences consistent.
• Collaborate with marketing, product management, communications, design, and business teams to understand goals and audience needs.
• Help simplify complex industrial or safety information into clear visual communication.
• Take part in design reviews, creative discussions, and cross-functional meetings.
• Support production-ready deliverables with accuracy and high-quality execution.

Qualifications

Minimum: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.

Additional qualifications:

• Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and related design tools.
• Experience supporting brand management across formats such as packaging, retail, trade shows, illustrations, photography, and marketing materials.
• Ability to help establish, apply, and manage design guidelines across physical, digital, and customer touchpoints.
• Currently pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, Brand Design, Industrial Design, Marketing Design, or a related field.
• Strong portfolio showing visual design, branding, layout, typography, and concept development.
• Interest in B2B marketing, industrial products, safety solutions, manufacturing, or technical industries.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, incorporate feedback, and meet deadlines.

Work Arrangement

This role follows an on-site model, with employees in the office at least four (4) days a week at 3M Center in Maplewood, MN. Travel may include up to 10% domestic travel. Eligible interns receive a housing and transportation stipend under current policy.
