What Is the Opportunity?

Underwriters evaluate whether a risk is acceptable and set the right price for insurance products. The Underwriting Apprenticeship Program gives students hands-on exposure to this work at Travelers.

This semester-long program offers qualified students first-hand insurance underwriting experience, on-the-job training, and the chance to learn about the property and casualty insurance industry from industry professionals.

The program is a potential pathway to our 12-month Underwriting Professional Development Program. It is intended for students who can apply to our Underwriting Apprenticeship opportunities starting in January. Applications outside this audience will not be considered at this time. For summer internships, you are welcome to apply to current Underwriting Professional Development Program Internship roles in various locations.

What Will You Do?

• Within your assigned business unit, you will have a designated coach and be expected to complete core assignments and training modules on insurance and underwriting principles.
• Complete self-paced professional development courses in areas such as time management and presentation skills.
• Complete project work over the program at your manager's discretion. You may work alone or with other interns, and you will present your findings to local leadership. Sample projects include a territorial risk assessment to determine profitability and underwriting opportunities, and a business process analysis to identify underwriting gaps.
• Learn about other areas at Travelers, such as Risk Control, Claims, and Corporate functions. Interns may also join Agency visits with Account Executives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
