What Is the Opportunity?

Applications for this posting will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Under close supervision, the Travelers Fire Internship Program gives qualified students hands-on training and industry knowledge while they learn about Fire Investigator careers at Travelers. Interns take on meaningful assignments, including:

  • Investigating low value, low complexity fires, which generally involve occupational risks such as burns, cuts, fume exposure, or back injuries from moving equipment or material.
  • Partnering with a Fire Investigator on origin and cause investigations, subrogation, and arson motive and opportunity investigations.
  • Completing the internship program, including 150 hours of fire scene investigations.

The internship runs approximately June through August (10-12 weeks). Interns should expect a flexible schedule with additional daily or weekly hours, occasional weekends, overnight travel, and multiple day deployments, which may be arranged on short notice. Travel for periods of 3-5 consecutive days is required. The role involves working in adverse conditions, such as post fire, explosion and catastrophic event sites, and in adverse weather. This job does not manage staff.

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. Travelers does not sponsor or support H-1B petitions, TN, or Forms I-983/STEM OPT for this role.

What Will You Do?

  • Work directly with senior fire investigative staff on fire scenes.
  • Learn Travelers systems and protocols during onboarding.
  • Take part in the mentoring program.
  • Observe the development of action plans and help investigate the origin and cause of lower level, less complex fires and explosions.
  • Build knowledge of general fire scene safety and potential hazards.
  • Apply critical thinking and the scientific method outlined in NFPA 921 to work through complex problems to logical conclusions.
  • Collect, identify and safeguard evidence needed to determine origin and cause, and maintain chain of custody for all collected evidence.
  • Build knowledge of local, state and federal statutes so investigations follow applicable laws and fraud theories.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
