Oncology Internship Program Overview

The Global Oncology Internship Program at Johnson & Johnson is a comprehensive learning and professional experience at one of the world's leading health care companies. This program is designed to build a future pool of talent/candidates who may pursue and apply for other opportunities at Johnson & Johnson upon successfully completing their degree program. The goal is to provide students with experience in working in a large pharmaceutical R&D setting and to gain an understanding of the science and process of novel drug/device development. The internship position is a full-time opportunity expecting to last approximately 12 weeks (May 10th - August 13th, 2027).

We work on a hybrid model if you are NOT lab based. This means you will be asked to report on site three times a week and can work remotely twice a week.

As a summer intern you will support an oncology research and development team focused on drug-device combination products. You will work closely with scientists and engineers on a defined laboratory-based project supporting the design, development, and characterization of combination products. The project is expected to focus primarily on benchtop device testing, placebo development and characterization, and mechanical testing, providing hands-on experience with experimental design, laboratory testing, data analysis, and product development.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Plan and conduct benchtop experiments to evaluate the performance and functionality of drug-device combination products under the guidance of R&D scientists and engineers.
  • Support development and preparation of placebo formulations/materials for use in device testing and characterization studies.
  • Evaluate mechanical and physical properties of placebo formulations/materials and assess their suitability for simulating drug product behavior during device testing.
  • Perform mechanical characterization and comparative testing to understand relationships between material properties, device design, and device performance.
  • Conduct device insertion/removal, deployment, or other functional benchtop testing using representative test models and fixtures.
  • Assist with development and optimization of experimental methods, test setups, and protocols for evaluating device performance.
  • Prepare test samples and perform mechanical testing using relevant laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and interpret experimental data to identify trends and compare test conditions.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and document experimental methods, observations, results, and conclusions.
  • Attend "Bench to Bedside" Lecture Series to gain knowledge of the drug development process and clinical research.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other cross-functional partners to understand how laboratory findings support broader product development activities.
  • Summarize findings and present project results and recommendations to the R&D team at the conclusion of the internship.

Qualifications

  • Legally/permanently authorized to work in the US with no required sponsorships. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requirements must be communicated at time of application.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited University or College program throughout the duration of the internship.
  • Must not be graduating before, during, or after the start or end of the internship program.
  • Undergraduate students with completion of a minimum of four semesters at program start or graduate students are eligible.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 which is reflective of all college coursework.
  • Student in good standing, working towards the completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
  • Coursework or experience in laboratory research, mechanics, materials characterization, experimental design, or data analysis is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, an interest in hands-on laboratory work, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Self-motivated, future scientist leaders passionate about drug development and clinical research.
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or service programs is desired.
  • Detail oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Possess strong leadership skills to participate and contribute to internship program initiatives and events.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Great interpersonal, verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
