Overview

Join thousands of university interns from around the world at Microsoft. You will bring your aspirations, talent, and potential to work on real problems, and you will be encouraged to build community and pursue your passions.

As a Security Research Intern, you will work under supervision to design and carry out security research. This includes malware analysis, threat and vulnerability analysis, adversary tracking, threat intelligence, and the development of detection and remediation methods. Your work will help disrupt adversaries and protect customers through defensive products and services. You will help create solutions, including first-party mitigations, and work closely with customers and partners. You will also support operational security, security incidents, security reviews, and reporting.

The team is building a cloud solution that gives customers visibility and control without slowing them down, helping them stay ahead of evolving cyber threats. You will join the group responsible for advanced threat detection, using machine learning and behavioral profiling to find emerging threats and advanced attacks. The goal is a hyper-scale service that defends millions of hosts.

Interns at Microsoft work on real-world projects with teams around the world. You will have the chance to bring your ideas to life while working on cutting-edge technology.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze threat trends and anomalies to determine operational impact, identify the vectors that introduce threats, and propose potential mitigation strategies. Learn how systemic security issues arise and how to address them.
  • Process threat reports from internal and external sources, and provide discrete threat data based on intelligence requirements or customer requests.
  • Identify security defects, vulnerabilities, and gaps in security guidance.
  • Contribute code for the technical implementation and automation of solutions to security issues, such as signature detection, malware analysis, threat analysis, or reverse engineering. Use results from research and experiments to support architecture or product direction.
  • Identify dependencies and overlap with other teams, provide constructive input so work is integrated on time, and communicate the status of deliverables and dependencies.
  • Help protect tools, techniques, information, and results of security practices. Respond to incidents for systems or products as needed, and use pen testing results to improve products and services.

Other Requirements

The role requires the ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. These include specialized screenings such as the Microsoft Cloud Background Check, which must be passed upon hire or transfer and every two years after that.
