Overview

Research Internships at Microsoft offer a dynamic setting for research careers, with a network of world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers. These researchers pursue innovation across many scientific and technical disciplines, tackling complex challenges in fields such as computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

Join the RiSE team at Microsoft Research and help shape the future of software engineering.

Projects will include work on the following topics:

  • Theorem provers
  • Program proof tools
  • New programming languages and paradigms
  • GPU programming
  • Machine learning systems
  • Software specification and testing
  • Model-based testing
  • Agentic engineering
  • Agentic workflows
  • Intent formalization

...and many more.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. They work alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's best researchers, and they learn, collaborate, and build networks that last. Interns advance their own careers and also contribute to research and development progress.

During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and are expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and take part in the community. Research internships cover all areas of research and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns must be physically located at their manager's Microsoft worksite for the full internship.
  • Applicants must submit at least two reference letters, a cover letter, and any relevant work or research samples. Reference letters can only be requested after the application is submitted, and they may not be requested for every candidate. It is wise to alert your letter writers in advance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience defining research questions and methods for an academic, professional, or independent research project.
  • Experience collaborating with researchers and/or product development teams on a research or applied project.
  • Experience collaborating across organizational groups and/or cultural contexts on a research, academic, or applied project.
  • Experience comparing alternative methods, prototypes, or analytical approaches to address a research or applied problem.
  • Prior research experience evidenced by publications or research projects.
  • Experience designing or conducting experiments and analyzing qualitative or quantitative results.
  • Experience communicating research findings through a presentation, poster, report, or publication.

Microsoft accepts applications and processes offers for these roles on an ongoing basis throughout the academic calendar (September to April). The position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted until it is filled.

Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation. Additional benefits and pay information is available at careers.microsoft.com.
