Job Description
IBM Quantum is building leading quantum computing systems, software, and cloud services. The Product team plays a key role in shaping the user experience and offerings for IBM Quantum.
As a Product Management Intern, you will work with research and product teams to build a productive, first-class developer experience for applied researchers using quantum computing services. Your responsibilities include:
- Identifying unmet or unknown needs of customers, such as computational chemists, optimization and quantum information researchers, enterprise R&D teams, and quantum algorithm developers.
- Using quantitative analysis (e.g., usage data, job success rates, workload mix) and qualitative research (e.g., user interviews, support tickets, community forums).
- Scoping the impact of a problem, such as how many users it affects and what it costs them in time, QPU usage, or result quality.
- Recommending features or experiences to prioritize on the roadmap that support the team's success criteria and Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), and weighing customer value against technical constraints.
- Iterating on designs (e.g., APIs and SDK interfaces, workflow templates, documentation, results dashboards) with Design, Software Engineering, and Quantum Researchers.
- Collaborating with Product Marketing, Business Planning, Developer Relations, and Engineering to define release criteria (e.g., performance benchmarks against classical baselines, reliability thresholds, documentation readiness) and plans for customer acquisition and adoption.
- Building working knowledge of the quantum application stack (e.g., mapping a problem to a quantum algorithm, running circuits, error mitigation, classical post-processing).
The goal is to translate accurately between what customers need and what the technology can do today.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or higher degree in a STEM area.
- Experience collecting, segmenting, and synthesizing user and client feedback.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work through ambiguous business questions and deliver insights with limited guidance.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment with technical and business stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Previous internship or work experience in product management, product design, software engineering, consulting, or at a startup, or a project you have built and launched with real users (an app, side project, club tool, or research project).
- Technical fluency from coursework or experience in computer science, engineering, or data science, comfortable discussing APIs, system constraints, or technical tradeoffs with engineers.
- SQL or Python for data analysis.
- Interest in physics, quantum computing, and emerging technologies.
