About the Role

At IBM Infrastructure & Technology, teams design and operate the systems that keep the world running, from high-resiliency mainframes and hybrid cloud platforms to networking, automation, and site reliability. The focus is on the performance, security, and scalability that clients and industries rely on every day.

This apprenticeship is a path into systems administration for people who have a foundational understanding of the field and want a less traditional route into it.

As a Mainframe System Administrator apprentice, you will work with System Administrators, Systems Programmers, and network and application teams on daily tasks of varying complexity. You will be responsible for the installation, configuration, upkeep, and reliable operation of one or more client environments, and may work with Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to customize solutions for the z Systems platform.

What You Will Learn

You will learn the fundamentals of mainframe computing and build skills in deploying and managing operating systems, implementing monitoring, configuration management, and reporting, executing change management, implementing system security, coding JCL, and writing simple REXX programs.

About the Apprenticeship

The IBM Apprenticeship Program lasts approximately 18 months and is an official registered apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL). Graduates receive a nationally recognized credential from the DOL. Apprentices are expected to complete their learning within about 12 months, at their own pace. After graduating, you will be eligible to apply for available full-time roles at IBM.

You will start with a local cohort, learn about IBM in your first few weeks, and then progress through a personal skills roadmap with your managers and mentors. Milestones earn digital credentials, and apprentices regularly come back together for ongoing professional and technical training. You will contribute ideas, take on responsibilities, and make decisions about how work gets done, just like any other IBMer.
