AI/ML Intern in Sunnyvale

This 2027 internship is hybrid, and interns are expected to report to the office up to three times per week or as the team decides. The role is based in Sunnyvale, California.

About the Team

The AV ML Infra team at GM builds ML infrastructure for AI and ML innovation, supporting use cases across teams such as Embodied AI, Simulation and Data Science. The team makes ML experimentation more scalable and efficient, improves ML engineer productivity, and drives adoption of advanced ML techniques.

The AV ML infrastructure includes the following areas:

• AI Validation & Inference: keeps model performance robust by running large-scale simulation workloads and managing reliable ML inference pipelines.
• ML Compute: streamlines and optimizes large-scale ML training and inference across cloud and on-prem compute.
• AV Pipelines & Lineage: automates ML workflows through an orchestration platform while tracking data and model lineage, speeding up engineering and keeping results reproducible.

Together, these systems help GM tackle the complexity of autonomous driving and move faster toward commercialization.

As an intern, you will help develop and optimize AV ML Infra by improving data processing pipelines, scheduling, model training and inference workflows, and/or testing infrastructure such as Carbench/HIL. You will support tool development, instrumentation and system monitoring to improve reliability, reduce latency and increase iteration speed for autonomous driving performance.

What You Will Do

• Develop scalable infrastructure and tools to support model training, regression and rules-based models, operations and inference.
• Suggest, collect and synthesize requirements, and build an effective feature roadmap.
• Code deliverables alongside the engineering team.
• Adapt standard machine learning methods to take advantage of modern parallel environments such as distributed clusters, multicore SMP and GPUs.
• Carry out other responsibilities that vary by team.
