Overview

About the Team

The Privacy and Civil Liberties (PCL) Engineering team is a interdisciplinary group of software engineers, forward-deployed engineers, designers, lawyers, and policy experts. Formed over 15 years ago, it was the first of its kind in the tech industry, rejecting the idea that privacy protections must be sacrificed for national security. Today, the team's mission extends beyond civil liberties, challenging false tradeoffs between operational effectiveness and societal values. The team builds software and deploys forward to ensure customers can tackle their hardest operational challenges while keeping ethical imperatives in focus.

The Role

As a PCL Engineer Intern, you'll work in small teams with minimal supervision and own end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects. Projects vary: you might improve core products in our platform, work as a forward-deployed engineer using our platform to enhance customer workflows, or research policy impacts of the latest legal and policy developments. Interns are treated like full-time PCL Engineers, with significant freedom and ownership over real-world projects that customers rely on.

As a PCL Engineer, you'll design and develop full-stack software products for privacy, data protection, AI governance, and accountability within Palantir's platforms. You may build security and governance primitives, applications for auditors, user-facing workflows for AI governance, or internal tools for data protection. Your work will directly help customers meet their missions and legal/ethical obligations, informed by collaborations with technical and non-technical teammates.

Our Principles

  • PCL Impact: We tackle challenging problems at the intersection of technology and ethics, rejecting the idea that technology alone fits every problem, especially socio-technical ones. We pursue novel projects that can change the world for the better.
  • Ownership: We see projects through from start to finish, using the best engineering tools for the task. We trust each other to manage time and priorities, giving people space to think independently.
  • Collaboration: We work internally with diverse backgrounds (forward-deployed engineers, deployment strategists, product teams, lawyers) and externally with customers, often on site, to understand and solve their problems.

What We Value

  • Interest in understanding technology's societal impact and addressing it
  • Ability to learn continuously, work independently, and make decisions with minimal direction
  • Collaboration in teams of technical and non-technical individuals, comfortable in a dynamic environment
  • Eagerness to solve technical problems with data structures, storage systems, cloud infrastructure, front-end frameworks, and other tools
  • Experience or curiosity in privacy, data protection, AI governance, AI testing & evaluation, national security, technology policy, or technology ethics is a plus

What We Require

  • Engineering background, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or Data Science
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, Java, C++, TypeScript/JavaScript, or similar)
  • Must be planning to graduate in 2027; this should be your final internship before graduating

Salary & Benefits

The salary range for this position is estimated to be $6,250 per month. Total compensation is determined by individual qualifications, experience, skills, and other factors. This estimate excludes benefits and potential long-term incentives.
