Description
Northrop Grumman gives employees the chance to work on revolutionary systems that affect people's lives around the world, today and for generations ahead. Our history of pioneering and inventive work includes the first flight across the Atlantic, stealth bombers, and the moon landing. We look for people with bold ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit who want to invent the future and have fun doing it.
Northrop Grumman is seeking Survivability Engineering interns. This internship is fully on-site in Palmdale, CA. Interns will apply physics and scientific principles from the classroom and learn what it takes to make systems low observable, from clean-sheet design through sustainment. Over the summer, interns may support one or more Survivability sub-disciplines:
- Component and system signature design, modeling, and analysis across electromagnetic (EM) / radio frequency (RF), infrared (IR), visual (VIS) and/or acoustic spectrums
- RF measurement and testing (Tiers 0-3), with post-test data analysis
- Liaison engineering, supporting technicians with inspections, defect disposition and guidance, and all-up system assessments
- Material and process development, testing, and application
- Mission systems design, integration and test
Interns may also support key responsibilities of a Survivability Engineer, including:
- Coordinating with designers and supportability/maintainability engineers to confirm component and system compliance with Survivability requirements
- Developing and integrating advanced technology to reduce system detectability
- Implementing analytical codes, building and analyzing virtual models, optimizing designs, troubleshooting, and performing trend analysis
- Designing, planning, and running RCS/RF tests (Tier 0-3), including setting test requirements, choosing methods and measurements, operating equipment, and delivering pre- and post-test reports
- Analyzing component and system test results and recommending changes to materials, capabilities, and other Survivability performance aspects
- Coordinating with suppliers and vendors on material, technology, and equipment design, delivery, implementation and test, including writing requirements and SOWs, providing engineering oversight, and tracking performance
Basic Qualifications
Candidates, regardless of age and hiring source, must meet all of the following:
- Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university and graduating after August 2027
- Be majoring in Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or another related STEM degree
- Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during Summer 2027
- Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship required) and Program Special access within a reasonable time, as determined by the company (U.S. citizenship required)
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of or experience in one or more Survivability sub-disciplines across one or more spectrums (RF, IR, Visual, Acoustic), including design and analysis, measurement, integration and test, mission system integration, and liaison engineering
- Experience working across engineering disciplines to set requirements and develop a balanced design that meets the customer's mission objectives
- Experience with CAD tools (CATIA, NX, etc.)
- Programming or scripting experience in Python, C/C++, Matlab, or another language
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance (or higher)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.0 or higher
Intern Pay Range
- Undergraduate (including graduating students planning to enter a full-time Master's program for Fall 2027): $21.50 - $39.00/hour
- Master's: $30.50 - $48.00/hour
Northrop Grumman's internship pay rates are standardized and account for the anticipated graduation date, the cost of labor in the geographic location, and whether the internship is technical or administrative.
