Mechanical Analysis Intern

Leidos Defense Systems' Mechanical Design & Analysis Department is seeking talented Mechanical Analysis Interns to join a diverse team that creates unique solutions for complex problems. With offices across the United States in defense, space, cyber, and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific, and IT solutions.

The Mechanical Design and Analysis Department is actively seeking college students (Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Grad) to work at our Huntsville facility over the summer break (May, June, July, and August, depending on student availability). This position offers students the chance to gain hands-on technical experience in structural and/or thermal analysis, FEA modeling, and hand calculations.

Candidates will receive mentorship from junior and senior engineers and will take real ownership of analysis tasks. They will be given challenges that make a real impact on hardware delivered to our customers.

Primary Responsibilities

• Support engineering analysis activities for DoD customers using a broad engineering knowledge base.
• Develop structural and/or thermal analysis models using FEMAP (structural) or Ansys (thermal) to calculate system structure responses and validate designs.
• Calculate margins to determine design viability.
• Collaborate with other disciplines to produce excellent solutions for customers.
• Present analysis results to senior engineering staff.

Basic Qualifications

• Must be working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited college or university.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Overall GPA of 3.5 or above is required.
• Must be willing to work in-office in the Huntsville, AL area.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Students with the following experience are desired:

• Experience with FEA software, FEMAP preferred.
• Experience with thermal analysis software, Ansys preferred.
• Hands-on experience with the design and assembly of mechanical systems.
• Strong self-starter who takes initiative on complex technical challenges.
• Willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive mentorship from an excellent engineering team.
