Overview

As a member of the Management Development Program (MDP), you will participate in ten weeks of Core Training and one year of On-the-Job training (OJT). Core Training includes classroom sessions, observations of departmental presentations, interaction with senior management, peer networking, and team-based group project assignments. OJT responsibilities vary by department and are assigned by the department manager. You may also handle additional projects assigned by the department manager or Leadership Development Manager.

Department Description

The Manager Research Group is primarily responsible for the due diligence and oversight of third-party investment managers and investment products utilized by Wilmington Trust clients. The team also manages several proprietary investment products, including mutual funds and private funds, and collaborates with other departments within Wilmington Trust to drive investment policy decisions.

Department Responsibilities

  • Prepare research reports to support the analysis of Senior Research Analysts.
  • Analyze portfolio risks, exposures, and performance drivers.
  • Manage the screening and presentation of investment ideas.
  • Proactively research and identify investment ideas for senior analysts.
  • Prepare documentation to communicate portfolio performance, investment options, risks, and pending decisions.
  • Participate in regular meetings and calls to discuss organizational developments, investment strategy, performance, and risk.
  • Collaborate with client-facing colleagues to strengthen their understanding of investment solutions.
  • Build a strong reputation as an investment professional within the organization.
  • Understand and adhere to M&T Bank's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the company's Risk Appetite.
  • Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and any issues raised by external regulators.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Ideal Department Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of capital markets and current industry knowledge.
  • Proficient with common industry tools such as Morningstar Direct or FactSet.
  • Research-driven skill set.
  • Motivated self-starter comfortable working with senior management.
  • CFA or progress toward obtaining the CFA designation.

Primary Program Responsibilities

  • Participate in and complete a one-year, non-rotational training program while creating value in the assigned department. Receive job-specific training, general banking, communication, and leadership training, plus personalized coaching and feedback. Performance measures may include objective test scores, peer and sponsor feedback, facilitator feedback, Leadership Development Manager-MDP feedback, Department Manager feedback, final assessment score, and year-end performance appraisal.
  • Core Training: Participate in training throughout the one-year assignment to learn banking, basic financial skills, technical skills, and leadership/interpersonal skills. Develop a solid understanding of banking functions, processes, and operations.
  • Group Projects: Work with a team of peers to build relationships within teams and with project sponsors, internal and external contacts, and senior management. Teams present recommendations and potential solutions to senior management at the conclusion of each project.
  • On-the-Job Training: Combine fundamental skills from core training with job-specific training on departmental policies, procedures, systems, and products. Upon completion, all participants attain basic skills to contribute as individual contributors or managers in their assigned department.
  • Complete tasks in a manner compliant with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls.
  • Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and issues raised by regulators.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Management Development Program is a non-rotational, one-year training program for recent college graduates, where participants learn sales, accounting, project management, and leadership skills depending on their career track. Training methods include classroom study, divisional orientations, and teamwork on group projects, coupled with on-the-job training for immediate application.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree candidate at a school where M&T Bank recruits MDPs (or an MBA student with no work experience).
  • Outstanding academic credentials (GPA of 3.0 or better).
  • Up to 1 year of work experience.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, analytical, computer, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Work/internship experience.
  • Work Visa Sponsorship not offered for this role.
