Naval Architecture Intern in Chesapeake, VA

DLBA Naval Architects, a division of Gibbs & Cox, is looking for a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Intern for Summer 2027. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support naval architecture work on steel, aluminum, and composite recreational vessels, commercial ship designs, and U.S. Government programs ranging from 20' to 250' in length.

Key Responsibilities

• Select standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for designing and modifying boats and craft, with appropriate mentorship.
• Carry out engineering calculations using first principles hand calculations and existing design skills, techniques, and company procedures and tools, with appropriate mentorship.
• Work independently or as a team member to develop complete design definition.
• Draw on broad knowledge of naval architecture precedents and in-depth knowledge of related technology principles and practices. Design areas may include resistance and powering, weight estimation, stability evaluation, structural design, and seakeeping predictions.

Preferred Experience

• Prior internships in naval architecture or marine engineering.
• Experience with a shipyard.
• Experience with hydrostatic software including GHS (General HydroStatics) and Orca.
• Experience with CFD software such as Orca CFD or Simerics.
