Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Hardware Tools and Libraries Intern to help support our hardware design environment, EDA tools, and related libraries. This role is ideal for a student interested in learning about complex hardware design environments, supporting hardware design processes, setup and installation of complex CAD tools, and setup and replication of their related libraries.

The intern will learn about the latest ASIC design tools and computer environment needed to run those tools, Schematic Capture and PCB design tools and libraries, and the general computer environment that hardware engineers use daily to do their design and simulation work from concept to finish. This will be a hands-on position as a member of our hardware tools team, working in both Linux and PC environments.

Responsibilities

Primary Focus: Hardware Tools environment

  • Develop new scripts or update existing scripts that monitor status and well-being of our design environment and servers used by hardware design teams.
  • Help debug and root cause issues that arise with CAD design tools and their related environment, setup files, configuration files, and server/network requirements.
  • Interact with the IT team and identify user issues that require IT involvement, such as user login and environment issues, machine issues, network access, and filer access issues between PC and remote Linux servers.
  • Help download and install complex design tools from vendor websites to our design environment, create/update related setup files, test the environment initially, and confirm everything is working before handing it over to end users.
  • Write simple to complex scripts that run on Linux or PC (depending on the task). Learn about, document, and update existing scripts that automate engineering design flow and help improve efficiency of daily tasks or implement better methodology.

Secondary Exposure: Schematic symbols and footprint libraries

  • Schematic symbol libraries in Viewlogic and Cadence System Capture tools.
  • Footprint libraries for Cadence Allegro Layout tools.
  • Assist with monitoring library replication from the main central site to remote design centers in other geographies.
  • Debug and fix any issues with the existing replication setups.

Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Coursework in programming and scripting.
  • Strong interest in hardware design and its related environment and methodology.
  • Analytical mindset and problem-solving ability.
  • Working knowledge of and comfort working in a Linux environment.
  • Strong desire to learn and investigate new areas of interest.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Familiarity with ASIC and/or PCB hardware design process.
  • Experience with Python, Tcl, Unix Shell, or other scripting languages.

What You'll Gain

  • Real-world experience developing engineering automation tools.
  • Exposure to professional ASIC design environments.
  • Understanding of high-speed hardware design tools.
  • Mentorship from senior tools and libraries engineers.
  • Practical application of programming in hardware development workflows.
