The Role

The Materials & Manufacturing Systems Research Lab at the General Motors R&D Center in Warren, Michigan is looking for a highly skilled AI/ML intern with strong experience in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Large Language Models, World Models, and Agentic AI. The intern will carry out leading-edge research in Smart Manufacturing Systems.

Researchers will join a dynamic team focused on improving GM's advanced manufacturing capabilities. Assignments depend on each person's background, and researchers are expected to provide technical and professional leadership in identifying, defining, and developing future strategic applications of AI in GM's factory operations.

Researchers will also advise GM engineering management on manufacturing engineering processes, practices, and tool improvements, and may take on leadership roles in GM programs or projects. They will represent GM in research activities with contractors, academic collaborators, other GM Centers, external agencies, and technical organizations. Researchers are also expected to build a strong record of invention, publishing, and presenting.

The Smart Manufacturing Research Group develops advanced AI/ML, Agentic AI, mathematical modeling, and optimization approaches, along with real-time decision support tools that help GM plants meet efficiency and quality goals. You will work hands-on to architect, build, deploy, and scale AI/ML models and agentic systems for complex manufacturing engineering and operations challenges. The ideal candidate can develop production-grade AI/ML solutions, evaluate emerging technologies, and discuss strategy, roadmaps, and business impact with senior leaders. Background in manufacturing systems, process design, smart manufacturing, digital twins, simulation, statistics, quality management, control systems, or machine vision is also highly desirable. Experience with production operations is a plus.

What You Will Do

  • Build, validate, deploy, and scale AI/ML models for high-impact manufacturing engineering and R&D applications.
  • Conduct technical work across AI domains, including classical machine learning, deep learning, GenAI, Large Language Models, multimodal AI, agentic AI, World Models, and physics-based AI.
  • Translate business and engineering problems into practical AI/ML solution strategies and executable technical plans.
  • Act as a technical authority on model development, deployment architectures, data strategy, evaluation methods, and responsible AI practices.
  • Generate new ideas and run research programs that apply the latest AI/ML tools.
  • Drive technical assignments in a resourceful, timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Work well with fellow researchers, centers, operational groups, plant personnel, and universities.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art technical skills and knowledge.
  • Build working relationships with internal and external subject matter experts.
  • Communicate and document results through internal and external publications.
  • Collaborate with global technical teams and lead discussions as a manufacturing AI/ML expert.

Required Qualifications

  • Pursuing an advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Must be a current student.
  • Demonstrated success building and deploying AI/ML models in production or high-value applied research environments.
  • Deep expertise across multiple AI domains, including machine learning, deep learning, LLMs, generative AI, world models, and physics-based machine learning.
  • Strong understanding of AI/ML development workflows, including data pipelines, model training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience applying AI/ML to complex technical domains such as engineering, simulation, scientific computing, and advanced manufacturing.
  • Background in manufacturing process modeling, design, control, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing engineering theory and production management and operations principles.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Proven record of high-impact publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Able to work full time, 40 hours per week, during the summer months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field of study.
  • Background in manufacturing process modeling, design, control, and optimization, with a track record of successful manufacturing implementations.
  • Proficiency in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.
  • Structured database design and integration experience, along with programming skills (e.g. SQL, C++, Python, R, Matlab).
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch.
