Electrical Hardware Design Engineering Intern

This position is an Electrical Hardware Design Engineer Intern in the Electrical Systems Department. Interns participate in a wide range of design engineering activities, including concept development, architecting, implementing, and testing printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) such as power supply, mixed-signal, FPGA, and microcontroller designs. Additional skill development opportunities include printed circuit board layout, signal integrity analysis, power distribution network design, technical trade studies, and evaluation of technology improvements. The selected candidate will work closely with their assigned mentor on tasks that benefit the intern's skills development and are valuable to the programs they support.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist in the design, simulation, modeling, and testing of hardware solutions.
• Work with design tools such as Mentor Graphics, Altium for PCB design, SPICE, and Visio.
• Develop and execute hardware verification plans.
• Debug hardware using test equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generators.
• Collaborate with team members on hardware projects.

Basic Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university and working towards a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Resume and unofficial transcripts included in application.
• Demonstrates problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
• Basic understanding of circuit theory and design.
• Exposure to at least one programming language (Python, MATLAB, or C/C++).
• Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or project experience with:
  • Multi-layer PCB design or layout
  • Digital logic design (VHDL/Verilog, FPGAs, or microcontrollers)
  • Power electronics or switched-mode power supplies
• RF fundamentals or communication systems
• Hands-on laboratory experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, multimeters)
• Familiarity with design tools (Mentor Graphics, Altium, KiCad, or similar)
• Previous internship, co-op, or undergraduate research experience in hardware design
• Personal projects or competition experience (IEEE, robotics, etc.) demonstrating electrical engineering skills
