Electro-Optic Intern

RTXTucson, AZ

  • $37k – $82k / year
  • Internship
  • Full time

Overview

Are you ready to explore the world of aerospace and defense? Do you want to learn from and collaborate with some of the greatest minds in the industry? At RTX, our internships, co-ops and full-time careers provide an exceptional foundation to work on complex problems, advance your skills and create a safer, more connected world. Discover opportunities to make a difference at RTX.

At Raytheon, the Electro-Optics (EO) Department is responsible for requirements decomposition, detailed design and production support of the EO Sensors/Seekers, including the detectors, cryogenic systems, and structures making up the sensor/seeker subsystems. The multi-disciplined department includes engineers who may be responsible for the following: designing, modeling/analyzing, and verifying optical components within a sensor/seeker; designing the structures that hold the optics, including any mechanisms needed to move optics, as well as the cryogenic systems used to cool and maintain the temperature of EO detectors; relaying critical detector interface and performance requirements to detector suppliers and verifying requirements are met; and utilizing many different engineering discipline skills to assemble, test and verify optical, electrical, and mechanical components as they are built up into the sensor/seeker subsystem.

What You Will Do

  • The Intern will spend their time learning and assisting on development programs and will be asked to be flexible while learning subsystem architecture, subsystem integration, or hardware design, as well as innovation related roles that could include design, design review, production support, process and metric development.
  • Participate as mentee and individual contributor supporting program activities.
  • Optical alignment/testing of telescope assembly processes.
  • EO modeling, simulation, and analysis applications.
  • Requirements development, requirement validation, and subsystem trade studies.
  • Design of optical and opto-mechanical seeker systems and/or test fixtures for missiles.
  • Working with engineering and production personnel to troubleshoot and provide root cause and corrective action to design and process issues.
  • Support production related activities in the assembly and documentation of electro-optical subsystems.
  • This position is an onsite role.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's or Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) major and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session.
  • Optical design or systems integration and test experience or coursework in one or more of the following areas: optical testing and alignment, optical laboratory experience.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • ABET is the preferred, although not required accreditation standard. 3.0 cumulative GPA desired.
  • Class projects, professional internships, or academic research demonstrating the ability to apply technical coursework or computer skills.
  • Using Computer Analysis Tools (MatLab, CodeV, FRED, or Microsoft Excel) for EO modeling, simulation, and analysis applications.
  • Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.

What We Offer

  • Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation.
